Unit 8: Most Beneficial Meditation

To choose from the meditation exercises we did, I would say the most beneficial exercise was Subtle Mind, followed by Loving-kindness. I think the subtle mind exercise is great for clearing the mind of all the mental chatter. I like focusing on my breathing. I find this helps many thoughts fall away. I think this is a good practice to do before I go to bed, especially when my mind is restless. By observing my thoughts without judgment, I can let my mind settle which, in turn, will lead to better sleep.
I find myself using loving-kindness as I am training for my half marathon. As move down the trail I smile to the people I pass and as I exhale I think, “send them loving kindness”. I have no expectations of them to return it, but I feel better as I move along. I think that this can be useful in my life as I find myself frustrated with self centered, rude people I encounter daily. Instead of feeling frustrations and anger with them that only causes me stress, I can simply wish them well.

  1. I also chose these two as well. That is great to hear that you use the loving kindness exercise for your half marathon training! You are definitely spreading loving kindness Sara! I used part of the Human Flourishing exercise while I exercise at the gym. I'm sure I look funny running on the elliptical with my eyes closed! I should keep this in mind while I am driving! I think that the Meeting Aesclepius is a great exercise but more difficult for people to relate to than the other two practices. Even the word is hard to pronounce!

  2. Sara, Ialso really enjoy the subtle mind technique, it really does clear the head and you can see things in a better perspective. I like how you said you are using the loving- kindness during your races, I have also found myself taking a deep breath and trying to send loving - kindness to people I kno who may need a little extra!

  3. Hi Sara.

I too get so frustrated with inconsiderate actions and people, because I myself always try to be considerate. However, these exercises reminded me to send loving-kindness out with no expectations or requirements. My requirements are mine and the person I pass on the street may have not had the same life experience that I've had and either way, we all need some grace here and there. These exercises have helped me to not be easily offended and to work on being peaceful no matter what is going on around me. It is truly an experience I wish to continue and grow in. I just mentioned to my mom yesterday as I am getting close to finishing my degree that if nothing else, the $ I will have spent on this Health and Wellness Degree has provided tremendous growth for me and it has been well worth it.
